COLOMBIA - SO CLOSE TO MACONDO
Macondo, the village whose foundation Gabriel García Márquez describes and the fall in "a hundred years of solitude" through the Buendia family saga is ultimately only a literary place. Yet, its power to summon the imagination seems unlimited. A place of magical realism, it ends up acting like a magnet when you hang around Colombia for too long.
And if Macondo does not exist, we approach it in Aracataca, the village where Gabriel García Márquez was born, in northern Colombia, very close to the great Cienaga de Santa Marta. But we have to continue a little further south to hope to get as close as possible to Macondo. On the banks of an arm of the Magdalena Mompox River lies trapped between Ciénagas and Ciénagas. It was between Aracataca and Mompox that I looked for my photographic Macondo.
